Did any of you see the suburb feature on Hamilton Hill (or ‘Hami Hill’ as locals affectionately call it) in last week’s West Australian? The article just so happened to coincide with the historic suburb being number 2 on the list of Top Selling Suburbs South of the River for the week ending May 9. We currently have a property listed in this suburb, 13A Fluellen Way, which looks out over one of the many green open spaces of this lovely sought after suburb.

Did you know that Hamilton Hill is steeped in history and enjoys a vibrant community culture? It was settled in Western Australia’s early colonial history when Captain George Robb chose a 2000-acre lot spanning from Hamilton Hill to North Lake after arriving at Fremantle Harbour in 1830. Today, there are still many local residents who are descendants of the first pioneering families. Back in those days, locals and visitors enjoyed picnics at Bibra Lake, just as people do today, only these days they arrive by car, rather than on horseback or in a sulky!

The area’s rich fertile soil made it a haven for farmers and the early market gardens, dairy farms, orchards and vineyards eventually evolved into big local industries.

There are still many historic sites and buildings in Hamilton Hill, including Hamilton Hill Memorial Hall and the Azelia Ley Homestead Museum. The suburb is also home to some of the oldest sporting clubs in the district and boasts numerous homes on larger than average lots of land with lovely established trees. 

The history of Hamilton Hill goes back a lot further than 1830 and is said to have many Aboriginal sites. Manning Lake was known by the local Aboriginal community as ‘devil’s lake’. This is possibly because of the mist that hangs eerily over the lake at various times of the year. For great coffee and an Italian style sourdough panini made fresh on the premises or their signature bacon and egg roll made with wood-fired bread, locals say you can’t beat Pear Tree Cafe. The owner and chef, Ron Canty, describes the locals of Hami Hill as “a delightful community with a great artistic and creative vibe”.

“It’s a very arty and musical kind of area, often called the ‘musicians’ corner’ or ‘artists’ corner’, so we definitely embrace the music and the arts.

The Bluegrass Jam that we have outside often has drop-in famous musicians that just have a little jam on Sunday morning, which is a really nice vibe and something special about this area,” he says.

Located just 20km from the CBD, Hamilton Hill is being touted as ‘the new South Fremantle’ and is attracting many young professional couples, young families and retirees.

In real estate terms, Hamilton Hill is a sought after suburb due to its green open spaces, abundant schooling options and proximity to Fremantle.
