I short-listed two agencies for 'interview', one of them Shelmark, after having phone-based and internet contact with six real estate agencies. Despite the other shortlisted agency also presenting very well, and also having clear local experience and a strong sales record, Shelmark stood out as the preferred real estate candidate. What was most important for us was choosing a real estate agency who we could trust to communicate well, and to help take care of the process in a non-stressed, non-rushed, 'warm' way. The sale of the house was associated with a very stressful relocation of my frail parents interstate into permanent residential aged care. We also very much wanted a real estate agent who would feel comfortable engaging with our values around the sale, which differed from a 'obtain the highest sale price at all costs' approach. We were happy to compromise to some extent on the sale price in order for other values to have room in the process - though as it turned out, we got a very good price for the sale, a price that was fair for both us as the seller, and for the buyers. I choose Shelmark in part because there was more willingness to engage on a personalised, value-driven approach to the process. We weren't let down, Shelmark fulfilled all of our hopes for a real estate agent in these and other respects. Shelmark's wonderful communication processes all seemed to flow naturally from Shelley and Mark, they weren't artificially done to create an impression. They appeared to stem from a genuine passion Shelley and Mark have to take care of the process - that the process counts, not just the results. I also really appreciated how Shelley and Mark were patient with some of the value-based decisions I made, for example to give the original prospective buyer a bit more time to arrange finances, even though it wasn't looking likely that they could do so. Overall, I couldn't ask for more. A collaborative, value-driven approach. A strong and fair price for the house for both us as the seller and for the buyer.
