4 tips to reduce the stress of moving

Whoever said change is as good as a holiday clearly hasn’t moved house! But moving doesn’t have to be the stressful experience most people associate it with. Moving to a new home is exciting! It represents a fresh start and is a great excuse for clearing your life of clutter.

Imagine if you could focus on the excitement rather than the stress when getting ready to move. Here are 4 tips to reduce stress levels and help make your move the exciting time it should be.

1. Check in with your agent to ensure your new home is ready

There’s nothing more stressful than booking your removalists in for a certain date and time only to discover that Settlement has been postponed at the last minute. Contacting your agent will confirm that all is in order and you will have access to the property at the time you have been advised. Not only do removalists need to be booked in, but utilities also need to be switched on ensuring you will have power on the day. Working with us, you will find we don’t wait to be contacted about these arrangements. We will contact you to confirm everything and communicate with you every step of the way.

2. Give yourself the benefit of time

If you can, try to organise your move over a few days or over the weekend so you’re not trying to move, unpack and settle in all in one day. It’s also a good idea to start packing non-essential items early. Pack a box or two of items you know you won’t need before moving throughout the period between Exchange and Settlement. Just be sure not to pack away items you will need like toiletries, everyday crockery, cutlery and cookware.

3. Pack a small overnight bag

Packing a small bag with the clothing and toiletries etc. that you will need on your first night in your new home (as though you were going on a holiday) will ensure you have easy access to everything you need for your first night in your new home without having to rifle through multiple boxes to find what you need. That way you can just hit the sack when you get there and start unpacking in the morning.

4. Avoid multiple trips

Sharing the load with family and friends or better yet, hiring a removalist company, will minimise trips to and from one property to the other, reducing both cost and stress.
